Major railway stations to get energy-efficient lights
In a bid to give a new look to railway station premises, the railways has decided to install energy-efficient lights. Under the new policy, the railways would provide lights at all major stations across the country as per the guidelines of Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body of theUnion power ministry.
According to a Railway Board official, the board has already approved the project and work has been taken up in a few railway zones. He said that all the zonal railways had been asked to install energy-efficient lights and compact fluorescent lamps at railway stations to give a new look to station buildings. This project would be completed on a priority basis.
Among the important stations likely to be provided this facility in the first phase are Allahabad, Kanpur, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh, Etawah, Mughalsarai, Patna Junction and Gaya. The railway would cover all class A and B stations under this project in the second phase, the official said, adding railways would save about 20% energy by this project.
The Railways, which has also been toying with the idea to install close circuit cameras (CCTVs) in all superfast trains across the country, has given a go-ahead to the plan. The new system is likely to step up safety measures on running trains too, sources said. It will help railway security personnel to keep a tab on the activities of miscreants active at vulnerable places, the board official said.
Though railways intends to manufacture new coaches fitted with secret cameras to maintain a close surveillance on the activities of criminals on running trains, it is serious about installing CCTV on a few select trains to ensure foolproof safety to passengers. Since smoking has been completely banned both on running trains and railway platforms, the CCTVs would help railways check it on running trains, sources said.
