Power Vision Conclave 2012

Power Sector at Crossroads

The last five years have seen record generation capacity addition of more than 61,500 MW in India- an unprecedented growth of 49%- making India one of the world’s fastest developing power markets. India’s installed power generation capacity now stands at around 185,500 MW.

However this is insufficient to meet the needs of an economy which is expected to emerge as the second largest economy in the World by 2050. To sustain this growth, the power sector needs to grow at 1.8- 2 times the GDP rate of growth. India is expected to set a target of 100,000 MW for the 12th five-year plan. This means a YOY capacity addition of 18000- 20000 MW.

There is a strange paradox in the Indian Power sector- while there is a huge opportunity due to the demand- supply mismatch; the sector is presently going through a difficult phase grappling with critical issues like fuel availability, surge in coal prices, access to domestic coal, fuel transportation issues, land acquisition, water & environmental issues, overseas equipment purchase, financially precarious condition of distribution utilities, distribution network improvement, sustainability concerns, competition amongst others..

The Prime Minister has recently promised to take immediate, decisive action to solve the power sector’s problems in a time bound manner and convert the looming crisis into an opportunity. The next few years offer a mixed bag of promises and challenges for the industry. The challenge and opportunity lies in meeting the very basic need of the people and give them the opportunity to be a part of the journey to a ‘power’-full tomorrow.
