Power Tussle: All-party delegation from Bihar met PM

An all-party delegation from Bihar, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and sought 50% of power generated (from existing share of 10%) at NTPC’s two upcoming plants (Barh stage I and Kahalgaon stage II) in the state which are in the process of completion.

The delegation also sought coal linkages to expansion plans of 500 MW Barauni thermal power unit in the state (there is a 250-Mw thermal power plant in Barauni, which is two decades old and is being renovated. The Bihar government wants to set up another 250 Mw plant).

The state, facing a perennial power shortage, suffered from a peak power deficit of 15 per cent between April 2011 and January 2012, as against the national average of 10 per cent. The state had a power demand of 2000 Mw during this period, against a supply of only 1700 Mw.
