World Environment Day: Green economy is the latest mantra
This World Environment Day (WED), be prepared to embrace green economy. The theme for 2012 encompasses various aspects of human living, ranging from transport to energy to food to sustainable livelihood.
The members and volunteers of Center for Environment Education (CEE) will start the day with a rally on Tuesday. The rally will start from ECS office on SG Highway at 6 am and will take BRTS from IIM-Ahmedabad to go up to RTO. From there, employees of RTO will join on bicycles. The event will fianlly conclude at Police headquarters at Shahibaug.
CEE’s Parthesh Pandya said that they are expecting more than 500 persons to join the rally to promote sustainable living. “We want to emphasize the fact that public transport not only reduces congestion on roads but also reduces pollution and use of fossil fuels. Moreover, bicycling, walking is included to promote healthy living. Electric cars will also be a part of the rally,” he said.
As per United Nations Environment Programme ( UNEP) definition, green economy is the economy that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. It encompasses water management, waste management, renewable energy sources, green buildings, cleaner transport and land management.
Chief technical officer at ECS Group – one of the partners of CEE for the event – Parvez Murshid said that they will set up e-waste collection centers across the city on June 5. “Recycling of e-waste such as unused laptops, computers, radios or media players can significantly help the cause of saving earth from heaps of unrecyclable waste,” he said.
Activities On World Environment Day
CEE: It will organize activities engaging children such as bird watching, origami, pottery, face painting, tattoo, clay modeling, and moving screening. It will also hold exhibition on Science Express Biodiversity Special train, dance performance and photography competitions.
Science City: Several activities for children including painting, quiz, hands-on demonstration on biodiversity, guided tour to its theme pavilions, and screening of environmental films, have been organized at Science City. Special screening of IMAX 3D films including Avatar has been arranged
Sundarvan: The organization will conduct a workshop for people above 16 years of age on snakes and other reptiles. It will also hold a live bat show on its campus in the evening, where visitors will be introduced to various types of bats, their habitats and living habits.
British Library: The library will hold a thematic drawing competition and a quiz for children aged between 7 years and 15 years in the morning and will screen the BBC Video ‘Earth: The Journey of a Lifetime’ at 5.30 pm
Gujarat Pollution Control Board: In collaboration with municipal corporations, the organization will hold cycle rally in the morning, along with state-level drawing competition on theme of environment conservation. Mangubhai Patel, state environment minister, will flag off the rally in Ahmedabad
