Official start for India‘s solar passenger car-SOLARIS
President of India Pranab Mukherjee waved the starter flag at the official launch of the “Solaris” solar-powered passenger car. The car was developed by the Delhi Technological University’s Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and is described as “India’s most efficient solar car.” Solaris is equipped with high efficiency monocrystalline silicon cells (21.4% efficiency) arranged in flexible modules of 800 Wp capacity that cover the car’s body in order to capture maximum amount of solar energy, allowing for a top speed of 120 km/h.
The solar car has a sedan shape with a seating capacity of 2 and option of adding 3 more seats. The body is made of special grade of fibre matt in order to keep it light in weight and performance oriented. Solaris will represent India at the Sasol Solar Challenge to be held in South Africa between September 15 and 29, 2012.
