Use ‘Green Fund’ to convert towers to solar: Farooq Abdullah

Batting for Green cause to curtail carbon emission and cut fuel imports at significant levels, Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah, said that if the telecom towers are turned onto solar, India can save enormous amount of diesel fuel.

Speaking at the Telecom Leadership Awards 2012, organized by CyberMedia, Abdullah said that this transition has a long way to go.

“Telecom industry is transforming. We should realize the amount of diesel spend in every tower. If we turn towers to solar, we can save enormous amount of fuel,” he said. India has close to 400,000 towers of which more than 20 per cent are not even connected to power grid.

“We have created Green Fund. We want fund to be utilized in converting telecom towers to solar, wind or other energy resources. It is a challenge for all of us. We can cut fuel imports, if solar energy is utilized. There is a long way to go,” stressed Abdullah.
