Tribunal order on coal import may raise power tariffs

PATIALA: Reacting to the recent order of Appellate Tribunal for Electricity allowing two private thermal plants in Punjab to import coal on their own, the Punjab State Electricity Board Employees Association said the decision could lead to increase in power tariff up to 50-60 paise per unit.

Since the 1980MW plant being set up by Sterlite at Talwandi Sabo and 1400MW plant being set up by L&T at Rajpura got coal allocation of only 65% of their requirement from Coal India, the tribunal has recently allowed the companies to import 15% of coal.
