Power tariff hikes proposed in Gujarat

As many as 14 power and distribution companies, including Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) and Torrent Power Ltd (TPL), have proposed tariff hikes between 2.57% and 11% in 2015-16. In petitions filed before Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC), GUVNL and TPL and other companies have proposed the hike for next financial year for the true-up of 2013-14.

The four state-owned distribution companies — UGVCL, MGVCL, PGVCL and DGVCL — have demanded an increase of tariff by 2.57% for 2015-16 while Torrent’s Ahmedabad distribution company has demanded an increase by 8% and that of Surat by 11%.

According to industry insiders, if this increase in tariff is approved by GERC, a burden of Rs 1,212 crore will fall on consumers of the four state-owned power companies across the state and Rs 567 crore on consumers of Torrent Power Ltd in Ahmedabad and Surat.
