Prabhu panel spells relief for 18,000 mw power plants

In what may come as a big relief for about 18,000 mw power projects that are complete but have no fuel linkages, a high-level advisory group has recommended ‘urgent’ coal provisions for them to ensure that they do not turn into non-performing assets (NPAs).

The advisory group on integrated development of power, coal and renewable energy, led by Suresh Prabhu (now Union minister for railways), presented its final report to power and coal minister Piyush Goyal on Monday, saying urgent action is required to ensure coal linkages to power plants already commissioned and also those which are likely to be commissioned by March, 2015.

The coal ministry is already looking to address fuel issues of these projects and may now ask Coal India (CIL) to sign fuel supply agreements (FSA) with them following the endorsement from the advisory group.
