Power Ministry concerned over SEBs mounting losses
The power ministry has expressed concerns on the deteriorating fiscal health of the state electricity boards (SEBs) whose outstanding loans have reached more than Rs 3 lakh crore and have accumulated losses of over Rs 2.5 lakh crore.
Power minister Piyush Goyal on Monday told the Rajya Sabha that the total outstanding loans of the boards have hit Rs 3,04,257 crore while the accumulated losses have mounted to Rs 2,50,412 crore. The SEBs and discoms in the northern region comprising states of Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have outstanding loans to the tune of Rs 1,57,634 crore, along with accumulated losses worth Rs 1,43,715 crore, the highest among all regions.
BSES Rajdhani and BSES Yamuna electricity distribution companies of the Reliance ADA Group, which supply power to large parts of the national capital have total outstanding loans of Rs 7,770 crore and accumulated losses of Rs 466 crore as on December 2013. Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited also has outstanding loan of Rs 3,762 crore and accumulated losses at Rs 1,581 crore.
