Coal royalty tweak revenues up mines game

Jharkhand known to be a mineral rich state has failed to earn much from its resources and most of the mineral rich districts are underdeveloped and low on human development indices.

While the government at Centre, under guidance of judiciary, took some corrective steps in bringing transparency in mine allocation and mineral extraction, Ragubar Das’s government in the state also took some important measures to increase income from resources.

Acting on Justice MB Shah Commission report, Jharkhand government had cancelled 12 out of 17 iron ore mines for the want of renewal of lease agreements.

The outgoing Hemant Soren government decided in October, 2014 to renew the lease of some of the government and private majors but it was after Das government came to power that more closed mines were opened and steps were taken to increase income.
