Power ministry proposes two tier tariffs for residential users

Imagine getting up at night to do your laundry or iron your cloths to save electricity bill. This could become a reality if the Union government approves the proposed amendment in the Power Tariff Policy.

The union ministry of power has proposed two tier tariff for day time and night time for residential and commercial consumers. Presently, this type of peak and non-peak hour tariff is only applicable for industrial users.

The Center has proposed to introduced two-part tariffs featuring separate fixed and variable charges and time differentiated tariff on priority for large consumers (with demand exceeding 1 MW) within one year. Subsequently, the government intends to introduce same time differentiated tariff for all consumers (residential and commercial) within a period of five years. “This would also help in flattening the peak and implementing various energy conservation measures,” the union government states.
