Madhya Pradesh discoms seek 10 % power tariff hike
Brace for an electricity shock. If the Madhya Pradesh power distribution companies(discoms) have their way, your monthly electricity bill will go up by over 10%. Discoms have in their annual tariff review filed before the state Electricity Regulatory Commission(MPERC) proposed a 10.65% hike in power tariff.
If the commission accepts the tariff hike proposal, every household will be affected by it.
A family of three, which pays Rs 556 for consumption of an average 99 units of electricity, will now be required to pay Rs 650. Besides, as power consumption goes up during summers, the family will be required to cough up an extra Rs 250-300.
The discoms are demanding tariff hike to narrow their Rs 4,528 crore worth revenue gap (difference between earning and expenditure). However, the same discoms are mum over distribution losses, which cost them Rs 4,989 crore annually.
About 90% of distribution losses are attributed to power thefts, said an official on condition of anonymity. Power theft is a major issue in several districts of Chambal, Rewa and Sagar divisions of the state, he said.
